Dean Phillips launches bid for president

Dean Phillips is about to kick off his presidential campaign but it’s perceived by many as a longshot endeavor sometimes even called a vanity project or a mid-life crisis. However it serves as a clear reflection of the growing discontent with President Joe Biden among some Democratic Party voters even if it’s unlikely to pose a significant threat to the incumbent president.

Phillips a millionaire businessperson has a unique perspective on his quixotic run. He believes that voters need a generational alternative to the 80-year-old President Biden. Those who have engaged in private conversations with him report that he genuinely feels an obligation to challenge Biden in the primaries. He also expresses concerns about Biden’s ability to win a second term particularly in a match against former President Donald Trump. Some describe Phillips as “frustrated” by the current state of affairs.

In his initial discussions Phillips considered publicly recruiting another candidate to join this effort. In August he even called for a “moderate governor” to step forward. His initial plan seemed to involve raising concerns assessing the potential for another candidate helping someone else enter the race and then gracefully stepping aside to return to his role as a member of Congress. However it appears that he has decided to take the plunge himself by formally filing paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission under “Dean 24 Inc.”

Phillips seems to be adopting a similar playbook to his successful 2018 congressional campaign. In that race he defied the advice of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee relying on his marketing expertise. He traveled extensively in a vintage milk truck focused on retail campaigning preferred digital ads over TV and maintained a largely positive campaign without going negative against his Republican opponent. Although this approach frustrated some Democrats in Washington it resulted in Phillips flipping a long-held Republican seat.

Now signs of Phillips reviving this strategy are already emerging. A “Dean Phillips for President” bus has been spotted in New Hampshire bearing the slogan “Everyone’s invited” reminiscent of his 2018 campaign. His “government repair truck” is also making a return repainted with “Dean Phillips for President.”

However running in a presidential primary is vastly different from a congressional race especially when the goal is to unseat an incumbent. Phillips has already faced hurdles failing to make the ballot in Nevada the second state in the primary calendar. In New Hampshire where he plans to anchor his campaign he is relatively unknown and only recently introduced himself to the state party chair. Moreover he’s up against a well-funded Biden campaign with strong party support.

The Biden campaign is expected to pay little attention to Dean Phillips’ campaign focusing on portraying him as a wealthy and out-of-touch candidate while highlighting his history of supporting Biden’s positions.

Dean Phillips’ decision to enter the race has left many baffled and it is seen as a distraction by some South Carolina Democrats who have not been approached by Dean Phillips. The primary filing deadline in South Carolina is approaching and Phillips’ candidacy does not seem to be taken seriously by many Democratic leaders in the state.

In New Hampshire the ongoing controversy over the primary calendar adds another layer of complexity. Phillips’ decision to run is partly influenced by the changes in the Democratic National Committee’s rules but he hasn’t reached out to South Carolina voters signaling a lack of seriousness in the eyes of some.

Ultimately Dean Phillips’ presidential campaign is a longshot but it reflects a growing sentiment of dissatisfaction within a segment of the Democratic Party’s base. However the road ahead is filled with obstacles and it remains to be seen how far his campaign will go.
