For ten unforgettable seasons’ he brought the character of Chandler Bing to life’ a lovable’ sarcastic’ commitment-phobe who eventually found love with the Type-A personality of Monica Geller’ portrayed by Courteney Cox.
In an interview with Diane Sawyer on ABS News Nightline last year’ Perry shared his deep affection for the character and the show. “I felt like I was gonna die if the live audience didn’t laugh’ and that’s not healthy for sure’” Perry wrote in his memoir. “But I could sometimes say a line and the audience wouldn’t laugh’ and I would sweat and sometimes go into convulsions. If I didn’t get the laugh I was supposed to get’ I would freak out. This pressure left me in a bad place. I also knew of the six people making that show’ only one of them was sick’” he shared’ shedding light on the immense pressure he faced during the show’s production.
Lisa Kudrow’ a close friend and co-star of Perry’s on “Friends’” reflected on his role as a peacemaker on the set. She stated’ “Matthew Perry was always the one trying to keep everyone else happy.” This insight into his off-screen personality showcases the caring and supportive nature of the man behind the character.
