Oilers: woes continue with decisive loss to Predators

The Nashville Predators showcased their unity and teamwork on a memorable Saturday afternoon’ resulting in a well-deserved two points on the road. Ryan O’Reilly played a pivotal role in this success’ delivering a spectacular hat trick and contributing an assist as the Predators put an end to their recent two-game losing streak by defeating the struggling Edmonton Oilers with a convincing score of 5-2. O’Reilly’ who joined Nashville as a free agent during the past summer after his stint with Toronto’ celebrated his fifth career hat trick.

When asked about the challenging matchup against the formidable Connor McDavid and his line’ O’Reilly humbly acknowledged the toughness of the task but emphasized the Predators’ connectedness and their commitment to executing the right plays while staying mobile with the puck. He stressed the importance of supporting each other as a team’ which ultimately led to the creation of numerous scoring opportunities.

The Predators’ Filip Forsberg also played a significant role in the victory’ contributing a goal and three assists. Thomas Novak added to the Predators’ tally with a goal of his own. Kevin Lankinen was a solid presence in the goal’ making 33 saves to secure the win.

Forsberg had high praise for O’Reilly’ referring to him as possibly the smartest player he’s had the privilege of playing with in the league. He commended O’Reilly’s exceptional positioning and skill with his stick’ highlighting his ability to locate loose pucks around the net and convert them into goals.

Darnell Nurse and Zach Hyman managed to score in response for the struggling Oilers’ who have now lost six of their last seven games. Goaltender Jack Campbell stopped 29 of the 34 shots he faced. McDavid lamented the mental mistakes that have plagued the team’ making it difficult to recover in games’ emphasizing that every error feels like “death by a thousand cuts.”

Edmonton continues to seek its first win at Rogers Place this season’ and Hyman expressed the team’s frustration with their inability to rectify recurring mistakes. He emphasized that there is no magical solution; they simply need to implement the known solutions effectively.

The game began with Nurse opening the scoring on a power play with a point shot’ but Nashville responded rapidly as Forsberg tied the score just 25 seconds later with a skillful wraparound. It was a special moment for Predators defenseman Marc Del Gaizo’ who earned an assist in his NHL debut.

O’Reilly wasted no time in the second period’ scoring a rebound goal just 23 seconds in’ courtesy of a Forsberg shot that deflected off Campbell’s toe. The duo continued to shine on the power play’ with Forsberg making a brilliant pass to set up O’Reilly for his second goal.

Hyman managed to get a goal back for the Oilers on a power play’ and Novak reestablished the Predators’ two-goal lead with a beautiful shot that beat Campbell high to the stick side.

In a remarkable sequence’ O’Reilly effectively scored twice on the same shift during the third period. He initially put the puck in with a chip shot from the slot to complete his hat trick. However’ a review revealed that a previous shot by O’Reilly had already crossed the line earlier in the same shift’ but it had gone unnoticed in the heat of the moment.

In the post-game interview’ O’Reilly admitted it was a unique experience to score two goals in a single shift and shared his momentary confusion when the first goal was not acknowledged. The review ultimately corrected the oversight’ allowing him to celebrate his incredible achievement.

In closing notes’ it’s worth mentioning that Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl’ who has been a dominant force against Nashville in the past’ was held off the scoresheet in this game. The Oilers’ Raphael Lavoie made his NHL debut’ and defenseman Philip Broberg was reassigned to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors.
