Richard Roundtree: star of ‘Shaft’ dies at 81

Richard Roundtree who passed away at the age of 81 in Los Angeles on Tuesday was undeniably one of the most effortlessly cool actors of his time.

Back in 1971 when he was cast as John Shaft a Black private investigator in the film bearing the same name Richard Roundtree was a relatively unknown figure. How ever he burst onto the screen with an unmatched presence as noted by film scholar Novotny Lawrence. In the very opening moments of the movie Shaft emerged from the subway strolling through the streets of New York City with absolute authority.

Richard Roundtree was a groundbreaking character in cinema a proudly Black figure exuding confidence and swagger. He fearlessly stood up to ignorant white cops and took on mobsters. “He gave Black people an iconic figure in the ’70s” Lawrence emphasized.

The success of Shaft not only made Richard Roundtree a star but also played a pivotal role in shaping an entire genre: Blaxploitation.

Richard Roundtree’s career extended well beyond Shaft. He reprised the role in several Shaft sequels and amassed an impressive filmography with over 150 movie and TV credits to his name. His work spanned a wide range from acclaimed productions like “Roots” to popular series like “Desperate Housewives” and “Being Mary Jane.”

Notably Richard Roundtree broke barriers when he publicly disclosed his diagnosis of breast cancer in 1993. By doing so he became a symbol that said “Men it’s alright to talk about it. Even Shaft had breast cancer” according to Lawrence.

On Tuesday Richard Roundtree passed away due to pancreatic cancer leaving behind five children. Actor Samuel L. Jackson who starred in later Shaft films paid tribute to him on social media suggesting that Roundtree was undoubtedly strutting his unforgettable Shaft-style swagger in Heaven—a legacy that left an indelible mark on both film and American culture.
