World Wide News

Former attorney Sidney Powell who once represented Donald Trump has entered a guilty plea in the Georgia election subversion case just a day before her trial was scheduled to commence.

As part of her guilty plea Powell acknowledges her involvement in the breach of election systems in rural Coffee County Georgia which occurred in January 2021. Working alongside local GOP officials a group of Trump supporters gained unauthorized access to and copied data from the county’s election systems in an attempt to substantiate claims of election irregularities.

Fulton County prosecutors have recommended a six-year probationary sentence for Powell. She will also be obligated to provide testimony in future trials pen an apology letter to Georgia citizens pay nearly $9000 in restitution and fines and submit relevant documents. Notably former President Trump who is a co-defendant in the Fulton County case is not mentioned in Powell’s plea documents and was not referenced during the brief plea hearing.

Following the 2020 election Sidney Powell propagated conspiracy theories alleging election fraud and unsubstantiated claims of millions of votes being manipulated in a global plot against Trump involving foreign powers like Venezuela. She is now the second individual in the sprawling racketeering case to plead guilty following bail bondsman Scott Hall who agreed to testify in future trials. The other 17 defendants including Trump have maintained their not guilty pleas.

Powell’s guilty plea acknowledges her actions post-2020 election where she willfully tampered with electronic ballot markers and tabulating machines. She also admitted to taking and using information data and software belonging to Dominion Voting Systems Corporation. Furthermore she confessed to hiring a data forensics firm and sending employees to Coffee County to unlawfully access government computers with the intent to examine personal voter data fully aware that it was unauthorized.

Her attorneys had previously disputed prosecutors’ claims that she orchestrated the Coffee County breach asserting that she was not the driving force behind the incident. This plea deal represents a significant development for the prosecutors indicating that Powell’s cooperation is substantial and credible according to legal analysts.

The plea agreement also involves another Georgia defendant Misty Hampton the former Coffee County elections supervisor during the 2020 election cycle. Powell acknowledges having entered into a criminal conspiracy with Hampton and would be required to testify against her should her case proceed to trial.

The last-minute guilty plea has significantly altered the trial that was set to commence with jury selection for Sidney Powell and co-defendant Kenneth Chesebro. Chesebro who pleaded not guilty to seven related crimes is now expected to move forward alone in the courtroom showdown.

Despite the developments in the Georgia case Sidney Powell is still facing legal challenges in other arenas. Sidney Powell is an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal election subversion case against Donald Trump. Additionally she is confronting substantial defamation lawsuits filed by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic two voting technology companies for baseless accusations of election manipulation during the 2020 election.
